Subscriptions are no longer available, although you can purchase back issues online at www.thegraycenter.org/shop.  While we recognize the need for and value of the Quarterly, our staff is now moving on to other projects that we're eager to begin. OOPS--Due to a printing glitch, the blue cover of the last Quarterly, Fall 2006, reads, "Success at School: Responsibilities at School." It should read, "Building Community: Responsibilities in My Community." The interior content of the issue is correct. We apologize for any confusion this may cause.

The Social Stories™ Quarterly

Welcome to The Social Stories™ Quarterly! The Gray Center receives numerous requests for Social Stories™ and Social Articles™ addressing a wide variety of topics. This publication provides parents, grandparents, teachers, therapists, psychologists, children, adolescents, and other interested people with new Social Stories™ as well as old favorites. Each issue contains Social Stories™ and Social Articles™ adaptable for all ages and related to one of four themes:

  • All About Me (Winter)
  • Home (Spring)
  • Success at School (Summer)
  • Building Community (Fall)

Each year, the four issues were related to a larger theme, creating a four-part "set."

In keeping with The Gray Center’s mission, this quarterly publication promotes social understanding between individuals with ASD and those who interact with them in the home, school, workplace, and community. We hope that you will utilize this valuable tool and include it as part of your resource library.

The inaugural issue (Winter 2005), All About Me: I Am Unique, contains Social Stories™ and Social Articles™ related to the uniqueness of an individual, including interests, strengths and talents. At the end, you will find Pictures of Me—a Story which introduces a child to his or her diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome. This popular article first appeared in the Fall 1996 issue of The Morning News.

(This and other issues can be purchased in our online store.)

Each individual issue of The Social Stories(TM) Quarterly can be purchased in our online store.

A Letter from the Editorial Staff

Farewell and Thank You!

How is The Social Stories™ Quarterly made?

Every day, the staff at The Gray Center receives requests for help writing Social Stories™. We have identified several topics that appear to fall under common themes with which many parents and professionals would appreciate having assistance.

Christy Gast, Laurel Hoekman, and Jane Krug write the Stories and Articles, conferring regularly with Carol Gray. Frequently, they attempt to relate the topics to underlying themes so that they are more easily adaptable to a wide audience. (For example, the Summer 2005 issue, Success at School: Starting School deals in large part with transitions, since much of school--from starting a new school, to starting a new school year, to dealing with each new school day--hinges on an ability to handle transitions sucessfully. There are many suggestions for adapting the environment and expectations, as well as providing helpful information to ensure the sucess of all students, regardless of their age or where they attend school).

Once the Stories are written, they are laid out in the format that will become the final product. The artwork for the cover was designed by Laurel's cousin, Sean McAndrew, who lives in California.

The final document is sent to a printing company, and then mailed to everyone on the subscription list

Many issues of the Quarterly contain feedback forms. We appreciate readers taking the time to let us know how this resource is helping them at home, school, or in the community.
